Flooring for dogsHardwood

Dog on Hardwood Flooring

Pets and flooring don't usually go well together but hardwood flooring is even harder to protect from pets! The floor can be damaged by your pet nails. It's not a big deal when you have a kitten but medium to big dogs are hardwood flooring's worst nightmare! You can choose to shorten your pet nails to smooth them, it will help to protect your floor. Be also aware that any liquid accident can stain the floor immediately. In short, if you choose to use a hardwood flooring, you want to be extra careful!

Laminate

Laminate Flooring is one of the wood flooring which are highly resistant to your pet scratches. However any spills on such a floor can seep through the spaces between the planks and it will reach the floor underneath. You want to make sure you put a mat underneath your pet water bowl, or you will not keep your laminate flooring for long. If you've got dogs, you want to consider an emboss finish rather than high gloss because dogs will slip and slide as they walk or run through the home and it might cause damage to their hips.

Vinyl

Vinyl flooring is a popular flooring option for families with pets. The new luxury vinyl flooring is a great choice if you have pets and even for small children since it is scratch, water and slip resistant. It's low maintenance due to surface protective layer. Moreover, it's quite a quiet flooring which is good if you wear high heels or if you cannot stand the sounds of your dog nails resonating on the floor.

Carpet

Of course your cats and dogs will love carpets because it's the most comfortable flooring for them to have a nap on. However, this type of flooring is the last one on pet friendly flooring list because if your pet has a toilet accident, it will be hard to clean everything, especially if he does it while you're not home and it stays on the carpet for hours. If your pet goes outside and comes back inside with dirty palms then the carpet will be stained as well. So if you really want a carpet in your home, make sure your pets are 100% clean, or another alternative is to make them wear socks or sleepers! ;)
